Final Theme: Wabi Sabi
Artist Statement: When making the first piece, I failed several times, until I came upon a very rough design. As such, I thought that maybe the rest of the pieces I made could also be the same kind of pseudo-failures. So I cut a ball of clay in half, and molded them into different varying shapes with thin walls (kind of like paper).
Description: Several imperfect pieces, unglazed, one of which is unfired. Two of the pieces have dangerously thin walls while the unfinished one is too thick.
Analysis: No use of color, but maintains a balance and shape. Texture use varies between each piece from being smooth and rhythmic to being rough and patchy.
Interpretation: Use of imperfection is meant to bring out a natural beauty. It's designed to show that through naturally occurring shapes one can find beauty, for instance the first one is meant to look like a flower, emulating a flower's petals. The second piece was supposed to look a lot like shattered glass or shattered ceramic (without the dangerous glass shards). The final piece was meant to look like an organic form, somewhat like part of a living thing.
Judgement: I like first two pieces, but I do not like the third piece. The delicate look of the first two pieces have an attractive nature to them, but the last piece is too bulky and awkward.
