Hollow Form Sculpture
Artist Statement: For my hollow form piece, I wanted to use something mythological with a dual meaning, so I chose the most famous creature possible: a dragon.
Description: A large snake like dragon (amphithere) with Chinese characters on the wings. Inner wings are sky blue while outer wings are grey. Dragons body is made out of wire. Base of the sculpture has another character on it.
Analysis: Good use of balance, but not so great on contrasting colors. Would have been more effective to use an orange on sky blue or green on red.
Interpretation: It's difficult for a regular English speaker to understand, but the characters are meant to balance each other. For instance, on one wing, the words for Earth and Sky are on each other while on the other wing, the words for Dark and Brilliant are on the other. The base then says Balance, emphasizing that the piece is meant to embody the balance made between each of these forces.
Judgement: I'm a bit on the edge with this piece. I like the idea, however the actual words put on it should be in the language of the viewers, that way it's easy to understand. It also could have a lot more contrast on the body as a whole.
